Urban Warfare Unmasked: Gaza's Ethical Quandaries

The current conflict in Gaza is complex and can be viewed through different lenses depending on the perspective one takes. From one viewpoint, Israel is defending itself against attacks from Hamas, which it considers a terrorist organization. This perspective is underscored by the events of October 7, when Hamas launched a surprise attack on southern Israel, leading to a significant Israeli military response. Israel's actions, including a blockade since 2007 and its military operations, aim to neutralize Hamas' capabilities and prevent future attacks.

Conversely, the situation can also be seen through the lens of an ongoing occupation and the plight of the Palestinian people living in Gaza. The territory has been under a stringent blockade by Israel since 2007, heavily affecting the civilian population's living conditions. The current escalation has led to widespread devastation in Gaza, with significant casualties, destruction of homes and infrastructure, and a dire humanitarian situation. International organizations and some analysts view the Israeli military operations and the blockade as contributing factors to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with calls for a two-state solution to address the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
